How Physiotherapy Works in France

A quick guide for expats and visitors.

1. Get a prescription (ordonnance)

In France, physiotherapy is usually prescribed by a doctor — your GP (médecin traitant) or any specialist who follows your care, such as a surgeon or a sports doctor. The prescription is what makes your sessions eligible for reimbursement by the French health insurance system (Assurance Maladie).

2. Reimbursement

For prescribed sessions, the Assurance Maladie reimburses 60% of the agreed rate, or 100% if the treatment relates to a long-term condition (ALD) or a workplace accident. The remaining part is usually covered by your complementary health insurance (mutuelle), depending on your contract. Bring your carte Vitale and your prescription to your first appointment.

3. No French health coverage?

If you are not covered by the French system (short stay, international insurance only), you pay for your sessions directly. Ask the clinic for an itemised receipt to send to your insurer, and check your policy's conditions beforehand.

4. Your first session

The first appointment starts with an assessment: your physiotherapist reviews your prescription and medical history, examines you and sets goals and a treatment plan with you. Bring any imaging reports (X-ray, MRI, ultrasound), comfortable clothes and a towel — and a swimsuit if your treatment includes sessions in the pool at Oberkampf.
